Kitchen Sinks & Purposes

I want to talk about something different now. A lot of people read my last post from couple of days ago, but I’m going to switch the topic a bit. I was recently listening to a song and a certain lyric caught my attention.

This song is called “Kitchen Sink” by Twenty One Pilots and in the lyrics, Tyler Joseph(on the right) sings:

Because a kitchen sink to you… is not a kitchen sink to me

It made me wonder of what a kitchen sink is to him. I know what you’re thinking (or maybe not). Why am I going to play detective to find out what a kitchen sink is to someone? Well, for one: I really like how the musician(s) put(s) their lyrics together in their songs and two: Something just told me to do it. So I thought: “Why not?”

And this is supposed to be a simple question. Because how can I see a kitchen sink as that thing you wash dishes in, when Tyler Joseph sees it in a different way? That’s weird, right? So I had to look up what he meant and this is what he said:

Tyler: Okay, well the way that I like to explain that, okay so. It’s kinda hard to wrap my mind around it. Get ready- so I think one of the hardest things for people to understand is their purpose, and uh, in your darkest hour sometimes you’re trying to decide: “What’s the point”. “ Why am I even here?” “ What am I supposed to do with myself?” And something what’s really helped me is the beginning of purpose for me is something you only understand. For example, for me, something happened for me at a kitchen sink where there was something that I realized and it hit me. Um, and uh, for me that song kitchen sink and that reference means something to me.

If I were to tell you exactly what that meant, those times where I need motivation to continue forward, I wouldn’t have that as a part of my motivation. So, I’m in my darkest hour where I’m trying to figure out what to do with myself, and I go “you know what? There’s that thing, there’s that song”. Whether it’s a painting someone did or a journal that’s out there. If I were to no longer continue forward there would be no one there to explain this thing. For me that song represents having something that only I understand, and

…I’m not going to tell you what a kitchen sink is to me.

So as you can read here, it was that something that happened to him when he was near by a kitchen sink. So in other words, it could have been something else or better said: somewhere else. Maybe that isn’t making sense either. Well, he didn’t explain what a kitchen sink is to him exactly, but he did explain something to us. Let’s be honest here, everyone has dark moments. Moments where we sit in a corner and ask ourselves:

“What am I doing with myself?” or “ what am I even on this earth for?”

Now, I believe in God (like most people do) and I strongly believe that he has a purpose for me. But like Tyler explained:

“I think one of the hardest things for people to understand is their purpose”

“The beginning of purpose for me is something you only understand”

Because how can you understand your purpose if you don’t know what it is exactly? But when it comes your way, in the beginning, only you will understand why it is your purpose. Maybe you’ll have questions about it too. Questions like “why this?” or “how am I supposed to do this for the rest of my life?”

Am I making sense here? I hope I am.

Those moments will come when it’s time. You may not be used to it, but with time, everything will come into their place. Trust me, sometimes I don’t even know what my purpose is in life. I can say a lot of things, but I’m never really sure of those things either. I’m just trying to take in everything that comes my way and see what it can do to make a difference in my life.

So, I guess what you can ask yourself is:

“What is my purpose in life?” “Will I be able to understand it?”

Don’t be scared to ask yourself that question, with time (like I said before) everything will fall into their place.

Okay, I’m finally done talking now (I think). I’m finishing this with another part in the song that I like.

Are you searching for purpose?
Then write something, yeah it might be worthless
Then paint something then, it might be wordless
Pointless curses, nonsense verses
You’ll see purpose start to surface
No on else is dealing with your demons
Meaning maybe defeating them
Could be the beginning of your meaning, friend”

Yours Sincerely,

Clouds x
